Horizonte Minerals plc has published its fourth consecutive standalone annual sustainability report for its nickel-cobalt projects at Araguaia and Vermelho in northeast Brazil.

Operations: tackling major environmental, social and governance challenges in the mining and metals sector (Horizonte)

GLOBAL SOCIETY

Chief executive Jeremy Martin said that embedding sustainability in operational practices meant tackling major environmental, social and governance challenges in the mining and metals sector.

This also includes decarbonisation and minimising the company’s own environmental footprint.

“As countries around the world move towards climate-smart economies, there is growing recognition of the importance of the natural environment within global society,” he added.

“As we develop the Araguaia nickel operation, we are meeting the challenge of managing these precious shared resources, including water, biodiversity, land and air, whilst producing the minerals that are vital to this low-carbon transformation.

“Horizonte is committed to creating lasting value for future generations.

“We are building a business that is designed to create value for all stakeholders for many years to come.”

STANDARDS

Areas covered in the 2022 report include the workplace, partners, governance, goals and operations.

The report is accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative Standards (GRI) ‘Core’ option and accompanied by a wider set of disclosures on the company’s sustainability performance.

The disclosure standards and frameworks include the United Nations Global Compact, sustainability accounting standards board metals and mining sustainability accounting standard, and the mining local procurement reporting mechanism.
