GreenRoc Strategic Materials plc said that its Amitsoq graphite property in Greenland has been granted ‘strategic project’ status by the European Commission.

RECOGNITION
The designation comes under the European Union’s Critical Raw Materials Act and covers the extraction of graphite and processing of graphite concentrate into anode active material (AAM).
GreenRoc said that the status could provide benefits for developing Amitsoq “such as priority in permitting processes and potential financial support”.
Located in Southern Greenland, the high grade graphite flake project encompasses Amitsoq, an adjacent licence covering all “known graphite mineralisation” in the Nanortalik graphite district.
The property has two priority deposits of Amitsoq to the north on the site of a former graphite mine and the as yet undrilled mainland Kalaaq to the south.
The project has a 2023 JORC mineral resource estimate of 23.05 million tonnes at an average grade of 20.41% C(g), giving a total graphite content of 4.71Mt.
Measured resource totals 1.26Mt, indicated is 6.12Mt and inferred is 15.67Mt.
“I am delighted that our application to the EU in August 2024 for the first deadline of submissions has been successful – it is foremost a recognition of the merits of our Amitsoq graphite project and its strategic and commercial importance to the European industry,” added chief executive Stefan Bernstein.
“Amitsoq is the first and to date the only minerals project in Greenland to achieve strategic project status.
“From the EU press conference today we understand that Stéphane Séjourné, EU commissioner (executive vice-president) for prosperity and industrial strategy, anticipates a visit to our Amitsoq project this year.
“We look forward to working with the Government of Greenland and EU institutions to progress our project and establish true European domestic production of this strategically important raw material”.
