The Princess Royal unveiled a plaque on 6 May to reopen the New Cook’s Kitchen shaft which is undergoing refurbishment to allow re-entry to the mine at lower levels.

She additionally toured the workshop, water treatment plant, underground mine descending by the mine shaft cage and Winder House.

“We were delighted to have hosted HRH The Princess Royal at South Crofty, it was an honour to show her around the different aspects of the operation,” said chief executive Don Turvey.

He noted that there was currently no primary tin production in Europe or North America with most of the global supply coming from Asia.

South Crofty is mainly funded by Blue Vision Resources Ltd and the Government’s National Wealth Fund, for around a total of £57.4 million.

The ancient mine, across almost two and a half miles and 3,000 feet down with in excess of 40 mined lodes, produced for more than 400 years.
